Betting Board bans outdoor and social media gambling adverts.

The Betting Control and Licensing Board has banned outdoor and social media gambling adverts.

“Consequently, this board has banned advertising gambling between 6am and 10pm and endorsement of gambling operations by celebrities,” read the statement.

In a statement, the Board noted that ” Gaming is a demerit good and all demerit goods have the potential to harm the consumer with a possibility of leading to addiction as well as some disorder.”

“This board therefore as a regulator has a duty to present its customer, members of the public, the young and the vulnerable,” read the statement which was shared by Acting Director Liti Wambua

The board further directed that any form of advertisement of gambling must be approved by the board and any such advertisement must contain a warning message about the consequences of gambling including its addictiveness.

“Such an advertisement must contain a warning message about the consequences of gambling including its addictiveness, and that the warning message must constitute a third of the actual advertisement and be of the same font,” read the statement.

The board told lottery firms to adhere to the new rules by May 30.

The celebrities who will be affected are Footballer Macdonald Mariga, TV hosts Joey Muthengi and Carol Radull.
