ODM has accused Treasury CS Henry Rotich of crippling the operations of the party by withholding funding.
The party is broke and unable to conduct its normal affairs smoothly
According to Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, the party is unable to continue planning for the scheduled grassroots elections due to the acute shortage of funds.
While stating that it costs them Sh50 million per month to run the entire party, Sifuna lamented that the National Treasury only disburses Sh120 million s to them per year. He said they are entitled to 1 billion shillings.
He said the party has not been paid in full since 2013 and that Treasury now owes them 5 billion shillings.
Suna East MP Junet Mohamed confirmed reports that ODM is starved of funds further echoing Sifuna’s sentiments that the government is behind their poor financial situation
Reports of ODM being kicked out of Orange House by the property’s tenant were rife last year but the issue was later settled.
The party came under fire from Jubilee and a section of Kenyans in the build up to the 2017 General elections when party leader Raila Odinga and his Wiper counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka unveiled a paybill number 991444, asking supporters to contribute financially.
The party is now urging the government to release the funds, stating that it is breaking the law by withholding the money.
