Three politicians arrested over Matungu killings in Kakamega county among them former sports cabinet secretary Rashid Echesa and Senator Cleophas Malala have been released.
In a statement issued on Sunday evening, Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Hajj said investigations into the matter are incomplete and the evidence is insufficient, hence the four Echesa, Senator, Cleophas Malala, Matungu MP Justus Murunga and MCA Libinus Oduor be released.
The four politicians however were required to report to police on Monday to provide information of what they knew concerning the killings.
Malala’s lawyer has expressed frustration over the change and revealed that they will move to court as early as Monday afternoon over wrongful detention and harassment of senator Cleophas.
“It is our view that the police do not know what they are doing. How do they arrest the senator on one thing and charge him with another thing,” Malala’s Lawyer said.
The politicians were arrested over killings in which 20 people lost lives by a gang in Matungu in the last two weeks. A gang of two was lynched by the mob while three remain at large.
