Renowned author, journalist and 2002 winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing Binyavanga Wainaina is dead at 48.
Binyavanga’s family has revealed that he died on Tuesday night at a hospital after battling a short illness.
He was an outspoken activist of the rights of homosexuals in Kenya, as he came out in 2014 and publicly declared that he was gay. Two years after, he revealed to the public that he was HIV positive.
In April 2014, Time magazine included Wainaina in its annual TIME 100 as one of the “Most Influential People in the World. He caused a stir in 2018 when he said that he had plans to marry his lover in South Africa.
