Safaricom together with Vodacom are set to acquire the intellectual property rights to M-Pesa from Britain’s Vodafone inorder to expand to other Africa markets.

The Sh1.34 billion deal will also see Safaricom and Vodacom save a lot of money in royalties paid to Vodafone, CEO Bob Collymore told Reuters.

“We are taking ownership of M-Pesa, the brand and the intellectual property. Joint ownership between us and Vodacom and we then use that as a platform into running into other markets across the continent,” Collymore told Reuters in an interview.
