In a bid to create a 24-hour business environment, the county government of Machakos has installed 751 street lights and 878 Mulika Mwizi’s.
This is the greatest number that any other county has ever set up, Machakos Governor, Dr. Alfred Mutua said.
“Mugging have also ceased and shops and other businesses are opening late – just because of street lights,” Dr. Mutua added.
Rape cases in Machakos county have also reduced as a result of the newly fitted street lights.
“When I toured the Athi River solar street lighting at night, I marveled at how a dark place was now vibrant. I was touched by the stories that women used to be raped on the roads but since the lights were erected, the assault had stopped,”
To completely put an end to the rape cases in the county, the Machakos governor has proposed life imprisonment without parole for the serial rapists.
“It’s just a few people repeating these acts of control and abuse. Men who are convicted of rape three times or have raped three women should be castrated or receive life sentences,” a seemingly infuriated Dr. Mutua said.
