Kenyan Members of Parliament are planning to strip the monthly earnings of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) commissioners from Sh1 million to Sh16,700 per month.
The MPs want to reduce the salaries of the SRC bosses with a revenge motive as the regulation body ordered them to repay hundreds of millions of shillings they had illegally taken as house allowance for the past two months.
The SRC Act requires that commissioners are employed on a full-term basis but the MPs want to change this to part-time.
If the MPs’ agenda goes through, the commissioners will forego monthly salaries and instead be paid sitting allowances.
The sitting allowances for the commissioners is capped at Sh50,000 per session.
The SRC Act part 1 schedule 2 requires commissioners to have four meetings every financial year. This means commissioners will be earning Sh200,000 a year, which sums up as Sh16,700 per month.
