Secondary school teachers now want the legal age of consent for sex to be 20 years.
Indimuli Kahi, the chairperson of Kenya Secondary School Heads Association, said at the age of 20 students have become adults and are also completing secondary school.
He added that lowering the consent age will be a depiction of how low our morals are as a country.
Kahi said KESSHA will push for the increase of the sex consent age to 20 as young people are mature by that period.
“At the age of 18 our children are not allowed to drink or drive. Then why do we want them to engage in sexual activities?” posed Kahi.
Kahi said this during the 44th annual KESSHA conference at the Kenya School of Administration in Mombasa.
Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is also one of the leaders who has opposed the lowering of the sex consent age to 16 years.
The CS said lowering age of consent is ill-advised as young people have to be protected.
