Jowie’s lawyer suggests slain Monicah Kimani ‘died of starvation’

The trial of slain business woman Monica Kimani began on Tuesday morning at the Milimani law courts.

The two accused, Joseph Kuria Irungu aka Jowie and journalist Jacqueline Maribe, took fresh pleas in court, where they denied murdering Monicah.

Jowie’s lawyer presented his opening statement and he suggested that the cause of Monicah’s death could be starvation.

The lawyer, David Ayuo, questioned an expert witness asking if he was sure Monicah took any food on that day.

“Did you open her oesophagus to ascertain the food Monica Kimani took that day? Did you open her stomach? Could we suggest that the cause of her death was as a result of starvation?” asked Jowie’s lawyer.

The expert witness had testified that Monicah met her demise as her trachea had been slit open, and that blood was oozing from her private parts.

Maribe’s lawyer also spoke on Tuesday, objecting the presentation of Monicah’s pictures in court.

“The court does not need to know whether Monicah was beautiful or not,” said Katwe Kigen, the lawyer to Maribe.

However, presiding judge Justice Wakiaga allowed the presentation of the pictures by the prosecution.

Monicah’s body was found lying in a pool of blood in her bathtub at her Lamuria Gardens home in Nairobi on September 18, 2018.
