Safaricom has introduced a feature that allows you to make voice and video calls using the internet.
The feature is activated by going to your settings menu, then wireless network then mobile network and turn on the Volte calls.
The move is meant to help the telco ward off competition from apps such as whatsapp, Facebook, skype and many others.
But how do you get connected to VoLTE?
- Both your phone and sim card should be 4G enabled.
2. You should be situated in an area with 4G network.
Not all areas have the 4G network especially those in rural areas. However, Safaricom has promised to double the number of 4G base stations across the country to about 5,000 by the end of the year.
3. Your 4G phone should be VoLTE – enabled.
So far, there are only six brands which are VoLTE – enabled. They include Samsung, Nokia, Huawei, Neon, Tecno and Itel.
Other phones such as Iphones are not VoLTE-enabled.
iPhones aren’t currently supported as support should come directly from the manufacturer, Apple. But this will be rolled out soon when Safaricom 4G countrywide coverage meets Apple’s demands. All new generation iPhones will be eligible for VoLTE.
4. Update your phone software to the latest version.
You can find an update on your phone settings.
5. Enable VoLTE calls.
If your phone is among the six which have been listed as VoLTE-enabled, you can activate VoLTE calls.
