An 80-year-old granny has been arrested for allegedly being one of the key suspects of human trafficking in Kayole, Nairobi.
Sophia Wanjiru was arrested alongside 41-year-old Said Hamisi and 52-year-old Maimuna Bakari in Soweto slums on Monday.
Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) confirmed the arrests, saying that the three were nabbed in Soweto slums, and rescued nine children believed to be victims of human trafficking.
The children mostly aged between 12 years and 17 years, were found by detective packed in one room.
The operation was triggered by the disappearance of a 17-year-old student from Soweto, whose search led the team of detectives to the house where the children were.
The suspects are in custody and will be investigated to know why they were holding the children.
Cases of children disappearing have on the increase in the area, according to the residents.
