Maybe because his status in government, Dennis Itumbi has received some special privileges since he was arrested.
Authorities have claimed that Itumbi was allowed to sit outside his cell with his friends at Muthaiga Police Station. The Muthaiga OCS, Alphonce Kemengua, has since being interdicted.
After getting that access, Itumbi was able to take selfies with his friends, TV journalist Jacque Maribe, his brother David Itumbi, and politician Josiah Murigu.
Another privilege that Itumbi has enjoyed is being allowed to choose the kind of prison he is being detained in. Originally, Milimani court magistrate Zainab Abdul ruled that he be detained at Kamukunji Police Station. He requested to be locked up at State House, Gigiri or Muthaiga police stations.
“Your honour, I listened carefully to the prosecution applying for me to be held at Kamukunji Police Station. That’s a place I’m familiar with, from my time as a journalist and also as a government officer. It’s a place where hardcore criminals are held, suspects of terror, murder too,” Itumbi told the judge.
Itumbi is now being detained at Muthaiga Police Station until July 10, 2019 when his case will be heard.
