What betting firms suspension means to media, telcom companies

Media companies and telcom companies will see their revenue drop after the government ordered withdrawal of paybill numbers of betting companies.

The government Wednesday in a letter to telcos ordered that the paybill numbers and SMS codes of betting companies be stopped since the companies have not complied with government directive.

Media houses will be the most hit since they get a lot of advertising revenue from betting firms. They include television, radio, online and newspapers.

Telcom companies also get fees from the paybill and SMS code services they offer to betting firms.

A total of 27 companies are accused of failing to pay taxes amounting to Sh204 billion and are said to have paid only Sh4 billion.

SportPesa, Betin, Betway, Betpawa, Elitebet, PremierBet, Lucky2u, 1xBet, MozzartBet, Dafabet, World Sports Betting, Atari Gaming, Palms Bet and Betboss are some of the affected companies.
