Mwangi Kiunjuri to import 19m bags of maize, Kuttuny says the CS is serving cartels

Cabinet Secretary of Agriculture and irrigation Mwangi Kiunjuri announced that the country has a maize shortage of 19 million bags.

Cheragany MP Joshua Kuttuny has dismissed these claims saying there is no maize shortage in the country. Kuttuny said that CS Kiunjuri is only serving the needs of cartels by importing maize.

According to Kenya Grain Strategic Reserve Chairman Noah Wekesa the shortage of maize is artificial as the country has an adequate supply of the grain.

”The maize shortage issue is just a scam and currently, a non-issue as there is sufficient stock of maize,” Wekesa said.

Elgeyo-Marakwet county Governor Alex Tolgos has also dismissed the shortage of maize saying that farmers in the North Rift Valley have maize in their stores.

However, Kiunjuri has not yet clarified on the issue while claiming that the cabinet is yet to approve the importation of maize as it is still under discussion.
