Nairobi’s City Stadium will now be called Joe Kadenge Stadium in honour of the late football legend, Joe Kadenge.
This is after a proposal by opposition leader Raila Odinga to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
“Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Kenyatta on the possibility of renaming City Stadium in his honour. We both have spoken with Sonko and has agreed to fast track the process,” Odinga was quoted saying in a statement sent by the ODM party.
Speaking during a fundraising ceremony to facilitate Kadenge’s funeral bill, Odinga announced that Kadenge’s house will be handed over to his family.
“It was Joe’s wish that the house in Mariakani estate be handed over to him and that wish was granted by the president,” Odinga said.
The ODM party leader, President Kenyatta and Governor Sonko each contributed Sh1million. Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) chairman Francis Atwoli gave Sh200,000 whereas Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi donated Sh150,000.
Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi gave Sh100,000. ODM Party Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris and Makadara MP George Aladwa each gave Sh50,000.
Kadenge died on July 7, 2019 at 84 years while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
