Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Thursday closed down the meat section of all Naivas Supermarket in Machakos after a laboratory report showed their meat contained chemicals.
Mutua closed the sections after a Naivas supermarket located at Gateway Mall in Mavoko, Machakos County was found to have 3.286 milligrams of an illegal additive in their meat.
“I have subsequently directed that the meat/butchery sections of all Naivas stores in Machakos County to be closed immediately. This is on the suspicion that the supplier of meat at all Naivas Supermarkets in Machakos County is the same,” said Mutua.
Mutua also said that these sections of Naivas Supermakets’ will remain closed until the government’s public health department of his county says they are fit to run.
“I direct my officers in collaboration with National Govt. officers to move with speed to all supermarkets in Machakos County for investigations and advisory to the public,” said Mutua.
Mutua also praised media houses for highlighting the meat issues saying his government will continue to be at the forefront protecting the health and rights of Wananchi
“I will shut down any businesses & institutions found to be polluting & abusing public trust,” said Mutua.
Naivas has acted after the Mutua order and has suspended the sale of red meat across all its store countrywide pending results of independent testing and assessment of its supplier base.
