A section of Kenyans on Twitter have welcomed the move by the government of shutting down Sportpesa’s paybill number, saying that the betting company has been exploiting Kenyans.
The discussion was fueled by an article on Finance Uncovered which revealed that Sportpesa made Sh130 billion last year from Kenya alone. The news website further revealed that the revenue was used to expand into the United Kingdom.
“Sportpesa grew rapidly in Kenya to dominate online gambling by zealously exploiting the mass arrival of mobile phone technology from 2014, but sponsors English country’s premier league while local Kenyan teams stay broke and underfunded,” read an article written by the Guardian newspaper.
However, some tweeps have defended Sportpesa by saying that they cannot control Kenyans’ betting behaviour.
Others have gone ahead to recognize the strides that the betting company has made in the sports industry.
