Maize millers close shop, send workers home over grain shortage

Maize shortage in Uasin Gishu County, Eldoret has led to the closure of at least seven millers.

More than 100 workers in one of the milling shops in Eldoret have been sent home as there is no work.

Workers at one of the millers told Citizen TV that they have not been working for the last two weeks due to maize shortage.

The government has announced that it will open a window for maize imports but some leaders including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have opposed the move.

Farmers are reported to be hoarding their maize in anticipation for better prices.

It is also reported that there are stocks of maize in NCPB stores but millers have not been willing to buy them.
