Senator Murkomen Kipchumba has spoken out on the arrest of CS Henry Rotich and other public servants for allegedly receiving irregular advanced payments for construction of Kimwarer and Arror dams.
According to Murkomen, there is a deliberate injustice being directed to people of Elgeyo Marakwet since the dams are located in his county.
“Killing these projects is just to satisfy short-term political interests but not with the aim of fighting corruption,” said Murkomen at a press conference.
The Elgeyo Marakwet senator also told off critics who he says claim he does not support the fight against corruption.
“I am in full support of the fight against graft but this is a witch-hunt. I will be proven right when the prosecution fails to bring forth evidence of corruption during the trial,” said Murkomen.
The Senate majority leader also claimed the arrests are just publicity stunts to prove to the public that a cabinet secretary can be arraigned in court.
“The prosecution wants people to think their is a war on graft when the facts on the ground does not support the purported fight against corruption,” said Murkomen.
Murkomen was speaking about the eight people who were arrested Monday on fraud and corruption charges over the multibillion-shilling Arror and Kimwarer dams projects in Elgeyo-Marakwet.
The suspects will be charged with abuse of office, conspiracy to defraud contrary to the law, engaging in a project without proper planning, flouting public finance management procedures and disregarding the procurement rules.
