The former Gichugu MP, Martha Karua, has endorsed Third Way Alliance Party Leader Ekuru Aukot’s bill – Punguza Mizigo Initiative.
The advocate of the High Court of Kenya lauded the bill by saying that it will bring gender balance in parliament if implemented.
Karua also suggested that the MP position to be abolished in totality to remain with only wards.
“The same formula should be applied to the county representation and current constituencies should become wards,” the Narc Kenya party leader said.
The Punguza Mizigo bill seeks to reduce the number of MPs to 147 from the current 416. It will also increase the county budget from 15 per cent to 35 per cent and a host of other things.
The bill, which aims at making the senate the upper house, met the minimum threshold of 1.2 million signatures. The county assemblies now have three months to pass the bill after which it will be sent to the senate if half of the counties give it a thumps up.
