Things you may not know about Dr Joyce Laboso

Today Kenya has lost a great and industrious Kenyan, that is Bomet governor Dr Joyce Laboso who succumbed to colon cancer on Monday afternoon at Nairobi hospital.

The former Lecturer in the Department of Language and Linguistics at Egerton university joined politics after her sister Hon Lorna Laboso died in a plane crash in 2008. She vied and won the vacant Sotik seat left by her sister.

She has worked as a Commissioner of the National Commission on Gender and Development. In politics she rose the ranks in parliament and served as the Deputy speaker in parliament from 2013-2017. This is the famous period where a video of Gladys Wanga pouring water on her during a heated debate in Parliament went viral.

Her development record as the Member of Parliament for Sotik was impressive. Construction of Sotik-Borabu highway remains a key project that bolstered her profile.

She is married to a Luo engineer, Edwin Abonyo and together they have three sons. The first born is in Australia , the second born studied piloting in South Africa while their last born sat for his KCSE at Kabarak High in 2016.

She had to change her name back to Laboso after her opponents used her Luo name to smear her campaign.

She was among the three female governors that were elected to office in the 2017 general elections.

She came across as an easy going but tough politician who defeated the brawny Isaac Ruto and wanted the best for her constituents. She had a charming demeanor that will surely be missed by Bomet residents and Kenyans at large.
