Kenyans have lost three prolific personalities to cancer in just one month. And with the cases of cancer diagnostics increasing, it is frightening the number of things that are said to cause cancer.
Here are a few everyday items that increase your chances of acquiring cancer.
Petrol fumes. World Health Organization classifies the fumes as carcinogenic. It is equivalent to second-hand cigarette smoke. You are at a higher risk of getting cancer if you live in an area that produces a lot of pollutant smoke.
Exposure to too much sunlight. Harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun can actually cause skin cancer. This is why you are advised to wear sunscreens and sit under a shade.
Sitting too much. Living a sedentary lifestyle could be more harmful than you actually think. Exercising could potentially lower the risk of developing cancer. If you seat for long hours daily, you are at a higher risk of contracting colon and endometrial cancer.
Processed meat. WHO considers bacon and sausages to be carcinogenic because they contain nitrates. These foods are said to put people at a higher risk of colorectal cancer.
Red meat. Just like processed meat, red meat contains nitrates that can cause cancer.
Hot drinks. Consumption of very hot drinks regularly puts you at risk of esophageal cancer. You are advised to let your tea or coffee cool down before drinking.
