Deputy President William Ruto has hinted on the biggest fear that former Bomet governor Joyce Laboso had before venturing into politics after the death of her sister in a plane crash on June 10, 2008.

Speaking on Thursday at the All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi during Laboso’s memorial service, Ruto said Laboso approached him and expressed her fear of not being elected because of being married to a man from Luo Nyanza.

Ruto said Laboso felt it was hard navigating the murky political terrain with the name of her husband, Edwin Abonyo.

“Joyce told me, I have made up my mind to go for Sotik MP seat, but my husband is Mr Abonyo and the way you know politics, it might be an issue,” said Ruto.

The deputy president assured her that there is a way of dealing with the problem at hand.

He advised her to discuss with her husband so that she can drop his name and adopt the family name during her campaigns.

Seemingly the advice worked and Joyce Laboso was elected as Sotik MP.
