Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed has said that the country will shut down
“For the sake of national security internet & social media could be blocked any time necessary. As long as it is deemed necessary to save lives and prevent property damages, the internet would be closed permanently, let alone for a week,” said Abiy at a press briefing on Thursday.
The nation has been subjected to a series of deadly unrests after the assassination of the country’s army chief Gen Seare Mekonnen and a coup attempt.
Abiy reiterated that Ethiopia wants the internet to help drive development but warned that it is “neither water nor air” and his government will not hesitate to shut it down if need arises.
The Prime Minister took office close to a year ago and embarked on unprecedented reforms earning praise and admiration from the citizens.
The issue of unrests and internet shutdown has however caused worry among Ethiopians.
