Having belly fat is dangerous for your health. This is according to Healthline, which also states that having belly fat puts you at risk of cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, low blood pressure and stroke.
If you’ve been trying to get rid of the belly fat but fail, here are a few reasons why you might be having problems.
Alcohol. While drinking red wine in moderation lowers your risk of heart attack, high intake of alcohol leads to weight gain around the belly area. Studies suggest that consumption of alcohol suppresses fat-burning and excess alcohol is stored as fat around the belly region. You can enjoy a sip or two of your favorite cocktail but do it in moderation.
Sugary foods. If you have a sweet-tooth, you’re more likely to gain weight around your tummy. The fructose content on added sugar has been linked to excess belly fat. Avoid sodas, cakes, candy and foods that are super high in sugar if you want to lose belly fat.
Lack of sleep. Healthline reports that sleep deprivation can in fact lead to weight gain, especially around the belly area. Individuals who sleep less than 7 hours are more likely to have a big tummy. The importance of getting adequate sleep cannot be overstated.
Eating food low in protein. High protein diets make you feel satisfied, increase your metabolic rate and lead to a spontaneous reduction in calorie intake. You’re more likely to overindulge if you eat low protein foods which will automatically lead to weight gain.
Stress. Stress is a killer! When you’re stressed, your body releases hormones known as cortisol. If you’re stressed, you’re more like to overeat. Instead of the excess calories being stored as fat all over the body, cortisol promotes fat storage in the belly.
Sedentary lifestyle. Sitting for long periods and not working out might be the reason you have belly fat. Instead of driving or taking a bus to a close location, walk. No matter how busy you are, you have to set aside some time to work out.
