Three betting companies have hired top-notch lawyers in their battle to have their pay bill numbers restored.
Senior Counsel Paul Muite is representing SportPesa, trading as Pevan East Africa, Prof Githu Muigai is standing in for Gamcode Ltd, also known as Betin while Advanced Gaming (Xbet) is being represented by Mbugua Ng’ang’a.
Appearing before Justice John Mativo, the three companies through their lawyers said Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) breached the law by suspending their Mpesa paybill numbers and shortcodes despite ‘meeting’ the set standards.
The companies vowed to fight it out in a bid to restore the paybill numbers.
Mr Muite said BCLB acted arbitrarily, causing injustice to the firm and threatening hundreds of jobs.
Former Attorney General Muigai, representing Betin, said BCLB has a responsibility to observe the law and it cannot be allowed violate the same law.
Mbugua Ng’ang’a said Xbet had invested heavily in the business and suspending their paybill will hurt the company.
BCLB wrote to the companies informing them their licences had expired and they will only be renewed after meeting the BCLB requirements.
