Keto diet: What you need to know about the low-carbohydrates diet

The Keto diet is a low carbohydrate and high-fat diet. The main goal of this is to get more calories from proteins and fats, and less from carbohydrates. 

Consuming low carbohydrate puts the body into a metabolic state which makes the body burn fat for energy. The fat found in the liver turns to ketones which supply energy to the brain.

The advantage of the keto diet is that there are different types one can choose from. They include; The Standard ketogenic diet which is a low-carb, moderate-protein and high-fat diet. The Cyclical ketogenic diet which involves a higher intake of carbohydrates. Targeted ketogenic diet which only allows you to add carbohydrates when working out. The high-protein ketogenic diet which requires one to consume low carbohydrates but more proteins.

According to The Diet Doctor, these are the low carb foods that should be eaten during the Keto diet meat, fish, seafood, eggs, high-fat dairy like (cheese, butter), coffee with no sugar and tea with no sugar.

Foods that are full of starch and sugar should be avoided. These are the foods to avoid; potatoes, bananas, pasta, soda, juice, candy, chocolate, donut, rice, and beer. Any sugary food needs to be avoided in the keto diet.

There are two types of vegetables that need to be consumed in this diet which include; Above ground vegetables which are lower-carb and therefore that is the best keto options. cabbage, lettuce, spinach, avocado, are some of the examples. Below ground vegetables which contain more carbs and should be consumed with caution. Sweet potatoes, beetroots, onions, parsnip, just to mention a few.

The top ten keto vegetables include; cauliflower, cabbage, avocado, broccoli, spinach, asparagus, kale, green beans, and brussels sprouts.

The keto diet helps in weight loss, controls one’s appetite, controls blood sugar and type 2 diabetes, increases energy and mental performance, increases the physical endurance since the body has lots of energy and medical therapy of epilepsy.
