Serena Jameka Williams has been forced to retire from playing due to a serious back injury.
The 37-yeаr-old hanged her boots early on Sunday in Toronto, Canada while playing in the Rodgers cup final against the Canadian Bianca Andreescu.
During the first set, the tennis legend called for a medical timeout and in less than a minute later she announced her retirement.
Andreescu was handed victory in the tournament because by the time she announced her retirement she was trailing the Canadian teenager 3-1.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t do it todаy. I tried but I just couldn’t do it,” Williams cried.
The tennis legend complained of back pain from Saturday night during her semifinal match with Marie Bouzkova.
Williams has beaten 12 different players who were ranked number one including her sister, Venus Williams hence retiring with 23 Grand Slam singles titles.
