A sombre mood engulfed Morogoro town in Tanzania as dignitaries, friends and relatives gathered to pay their last respect to 71 victims who lost their lives as they tried to siphon fuel from an overturned tanker which went into flames.
Tears flowed freely as mourners witnessed the victims mass burial at Morogoro on Sunday.
During the burial, Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said 71 people died while 59 others were injured during the incident.
“A total of 71 people have lost their lives with 59 others being hospitalized, 16 of the injured are being treated at Morogoro while 43 are in Muhimbili hospital,” Majaliwa said.
Majaliwa urged the Tanzanians to pray for those victims who have been hospitalised.
The prime minister thanked those who stood with the victims by offering the much-needed support during and after the incident.
Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Saturday declared three days of national mourning following the incident.
