Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Chibanzi Mwachonda has tested positive for COVID-19.
According to a statement from KMPDU, Mwachonda contracted the novel coronavirus while dispensing his official duties.
Currently, he is in stable condition and under self-isolation.
Mwachonda says that his family is safe and the contact-tracing process of his close contacts is ongoing.
“The disease is in the widespread community transmission phase, all of us are at risk but that should not be a cause for fear or stigma to affected individuals or their families,” said Mwachonda, in the statement.
While urging Kenyans to adhere to the COVID-19 containment measures that the Ministry of Health has put in place so as to flatten the curve, Mwachonda said that the high number of recoveries in the country is a sign of hope.
“To my colleagues on the front-line, we soldier on in the service to humanity cognizant of the great risk of infection to all of us,” added Mwachonda.
KMPDU is reiterating its call for the government to provide utmost support to front-line health care workers by providing adequate and quality PPEs, as well as the “Welfare Package on Work Injury Benefits and Comprehensive Medical Treatment”.
