The Tanzania Government has launched a countrywide social media crackdown on those publishing “misleading” information about COVID-19.
According to a statement from the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the government is calling upon the public to report persons who publish “inciting and misleading” information concerning the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
“Ukipokea au ukiona ujumbe unaochochea, kuzusha au kupotosha taarifa za corona katika group lako au lolote lingine mtandaoni, piga picha ujumbe huo na namba ya aliyetuma na utume TCRA,” read the statement.
TCRA has gone further to provide a mobile phone number and the email address where Tanzanians should report such cases.
The Tanzanian authority has been cagey with information about the state of COVID-19 in the East African nation.
While her neighbours imposed strict COVID-19 containment measures including lockdown, curfew, and ban on social gatherings, Tanzania opted to proceed with normal life.
President John Pombe Magufuli has already declared Tanzania “A COVID-19 free nation.”
