Senate votes to adjourn debate
The Senate has voted to adjourn the debate on the revenue-sharing formula. 34 senators voted in support of adjournment while 26 voted against. One senator, Amos Wako, voted to abstain.
The motion to adjourn was proposed by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.
SENATOR WETANGULA: The country is sitting on the edge, all eyes are on us-The Senate. This window we have given ourselves, which was my idea in the first place but the House rejected it last week, we have now retraced our steps. Every senator in this house represents all the 47 counties. Let us not waste time, let’s look for a venue, let’s sit with CRA to come up with a solution.
SENATOR ORENGO: Most of the time we talk about equity throughout but if you look at the Bill of Rights, it talks about equality. Dealing with equality is much easier than dealing with equity. When it comes to public finance and allocation of resources, we are dealing with the concept of equity. It is better for us to sit and attain a consensus as opposed to having gainers and losers.
MAJORITY LEADER POGHISIO: I must congratulate Senator Murkomen for being able to change his mind today.
SENATOR MUTULA Jnr: I urge senator Poghisio to provide us with a direction together with Senator Orengo because the division we have seen in this house is in violation of article 96/3
