The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has approved murder and assault charges against Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa.
The lawmaker will be charged alongside Geoffrey Okuto Otieno over the killing of Michael Jola Ngumbao, and injuring of several people during the October, 2019 Ganda Ward by-election. The seat had fallen vacant after the High Court nullified the election of Abdulrahman Omar due to election irregularities in the August 7, 2017 General elections.
On the fateful day, rival Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party supporters clashed after MP Jumwa allegedly stormed a meeting of the party’s agents at Pendukiani in Malindi constituency.
Jola Ngumbao was shot dead in the fracas. He was an uncle to Reuben Katana, the ODM candidate and eventual winner of the by-election.
It’s alleged that the firearm used in the shooting belonged to the lawmaker. The cartridge of the firearm ammunition packaging is also said to have been licensed to the MP.
