- DPP Haji: “The matter will be mentioned on 9th November 2020. Babu Owino case is not a murder case as the Victim is alive.”
- KoT read mischief in why DPP Haji would move fast to charge MP Jumwa with murder yet Embakasi East MP who is accused of shooting DJ Evolve is walking scot-free.
- This is not the first time ODPP’s office has been forced to respond to Babu Owino’s case.
Immediately after the DPP Noordin Haji approved murder charges against Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Kenyans took to Twitter to lay bare what they say is “selective administration of justice”.
Trending for the better part of Wednesday, October 14, Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) used #BabuOwino to air their displeasures.
KoT read mischief in why DPP Haji would move fast to charge MP Jumwa with murder, yet Embakasi East MP who is accused of shooting a DJ, events that were captured on CCTV footage, is walking scot-free.
A user @tobiasolekina could not help but wonder why “DPP Haji is interested in Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa case which has baseless evidence while leaving Babu Owino murder case walk scot-free whose case has full evidence plus CCTV footage!!!”
DPP says that unlike Aisha Jumwa, MP Babu Owino was arraigned in court on 20th January 2020 over DJ Evolve’s incident.
The lawmaker was released on a Sh10 million cash bail, part of it was meant to cover the DJ’s hospital bills.
The matter was scheduled for mention on March 20, 2020, but it was stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, where court operations were scaled down in a bid to curb the spread of the virus in the country.
“The matter will be mentioned on 9th November 2020. Further, please note that the Babu Owino case is not a murder case as the Victim is alive,” says DPP Haji.
This is not the first time ODPP’s office has been forced to respond to Babu Owino’s case. In July, ODPP said that the prosecution of the MP over the attempted murder of DJ Evolve had been slowed down by the inability of the victim to record a statement, as the incidence had affected his speech.
