Former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale is in mourning.
The vocal politician took to Twitter on Saturday, October 17 morning to announce the death of ‘Malinya Pogba’, his champion bull that has won him uncountable matches in the famous bullfighting game.
The great ‘Malinya Pogba’ succumbed to East Coast Fever, with Khalwale describing him as “the King of the beautiful game”.
East Coast Fever is a disease affecting cattle in Africa, which is spread by ticks and kills up to one million cattle each year.
‘Malinya Pogba’ was set to square it out with Khavale, another champion bull, which defeated Mbappe, in a bullfighting match which took place on 5th September 2020, with the participants disregarding the COVID-19 restrictions to enjoy what they termed as a beautiful game in Kakamega County.

Khalwale’s love for bullfighting has earned him the title of ‘the bullfighter of Kakamega’, a trademark he uses in his political campaigns, and one that has endeared him to his supporters.
It is a huge tourist attraction in Malinya, with even the Deputy President (DP) William Ruto and a host of leaders attending a contest, in January 2019.
Bonny Khalwale’s unconditional love for ‘Malinya Pogba’ has never been in doubt. In 2017 when Khalwale went to IEBC offices to be cleared to run for the Kakamega governorship, the vocal politician demanded tea from the electoral commission officers because apparently he and his two wives had woken up early without taking breakfast.
Khalwale said that they had woken up at 5 am to feed ‘Malinya Pogba’ “that was to witness me being cleared” to run for the gubernatorial race.
The origin of the name ‘Malinya Pogba’
Malinya is an area within the larger Ikolomani Constituency in Kakamega South. Bullfighting contests are commonly held at the Malinya stadium, and Khalwale’s bull has been a serial winner in this ground, hence the name ‘Malinya’.
In August 2016, Malinya won a contest that meant he is a title challenger in a match that was slated for December the same year. In a bid to liken Malinya to Manchester United star Paul Pogba, the fans immediately renamed him Malinya Pogba.
