Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, her aide freed on Sh4M and Sh1.5M cash bail

  • MP Jumwa and her aide Okuto have spent four nights in police custody over murder charges.
  • The two are facing charges over the murder of Michael Ngumbao Jola during the October 2019 Ganda Ward by-election.
  • Jumwa, who was once a fierce supporter of ODM party in Coastal region, has since shifted allegiance to join DP Ruto’s bandwagon.

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and her aide Geoffrey Okuto have been released on bail in a case where they are being charged with murder.

Jumwa and Okuto were freed on Friday, October 23 by Judge Njoki Mwangi on a Sh4 million and Sh1.5 million cash bail respectively. Their passports have also been seized as they will only be allowed to travel after providing good reasons for need of travel.

On Thursday, the duo had pleaded not guilty after being charged over the killing of Michael Jola Ngumbao and injuring several others during the October 2019 Ganda Ward by-election.

The Ganda Ward seat had fallen vacant after the High Court nullified the election of Abdulrahman Omar due to election irregularities in the August 7, 2017, General elections.

On the fateful day, rival Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party supporters clashed after MP Jumwa allegedly stormed a meeting of the party’s agents at Pendukiani in Malindi constituency.

Jola Ngumbao was shot dead in the fracas. He was an uncle to Reuben Katana, the ODM candidate and eventual winner of the by-election.

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Alloys Kemo was opposed the release of the two accused on bail arguing that they will interfere with the witnesses. The court, however, released them but warned against intimidating prosecution witnesses.

The lawmaker’s defence team comprises of Lawyers Danstan Omari, Jared Magolo and Cliff Ombeta.
