KUPPET pledges to support the BBI report

  • KUPPET pledges to marshall all teachers to back the BBI report.
  • KUPPET rejects the enhanced powers of the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to not only advise the government but to set salaries for workers in public service.
  • KUPPET advocates for the creation of a professional regulator for teachers with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) remaining as an employer.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has pledged to support the BBI report by mobilizing members and other trade unions.

While addressing the media on Sunday, October 25, KUPPET’s Secretary-General Akelo Misori pledged that KUPPET is fully behind the BBI report.

To show support for the BBI report, KUPPET’s Secretary-General said that they will
mobilize teachers and all workers to build a movement capable of reshaping the political landscape.
The teachers union will also reach out to other trade unions and workers organizations to create a framework of consultation and grassroots initiatives to bring more Kenyans to the BBI process.
The union also committed to fight to safeguard and strengthen the gains workers have made under the current constitution.

KUPPET through its Secretary-General said that they will reject the enhanced powers of the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to not only advise the government but to set salaries for workers in public service.

However, KUPPET has hit out at SRC saying its policies negate the well-established principle of collective bargaining as enshrined in the 2010 constitution. In exchange for SRC, KUPPET advocates for the creation of a professional regulator for teachers with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) remaining as an employer.

They concluded by saying that KUPPET and like-minded trade unions will strive to educate Kenyans on the BBI process to make informed choices during the anticipated referendum.

“We urge teachers to seize this constitutional moment to read and interpret this document for all citizens within their communities.” KUPPET SG Akelo Misori
