The oldest and most iconic lion in the Maasai Mara National Reserve died on Wednesday, November 19 evening at the age of 16 years.
The lion who was nicknamed “Olorpapit” was weak for the past few years because of old age, but his situation deteriorated when younger lions attacked him a few weeks ago.
Chief Park Warden James Sindiyo says that Olorpapit was one of the most dominant lions in the Mara and was a darling among the tourists.
Olorpapit was also referred to as ‘the hairy fiery one’ and was born in 2004 in the Mara.
Together with his brother Olbarnoti, Olorpapit forged a strong partnership that ruled the Enkoyanai pride for the past 16 years.
How Olorpapit was incapacitated
Olorpapit’s woes can perhaps be attributed to his pride.
With his old age, Olorpapit bit off more than he can chew when he intruded into the Fig Tree Pride’s territory and fought with Kaka and Maridadi.
Olorpapit won the battle but lost the war because he sustained an injury to his hind leg and was almost incapacitated. His brother slowly started taking over the reins, until his death at Olare Motorogi Conservancy.
