The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has rolled out a recruitment exercise of 6,600 intern teachers ahead of the January schools reopening.
TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia says the commission has invited applications from qualified candidates. 4,675 intern teachers will be selected to teach in secondary schools while 1,998 will be posted in primary schools.
The secondary school interns will earn a monthly stipend of Sh20,000, while those in primary will earn Sh15,000.
“This is part of the national government post Covid-19 economic stimulus programme announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta,” said Macharia.
The internship programme will last for 12 months. Deadline for applications is Monday, December 14.
The 6,600 number is, however, way below what TSC wanted to hire.
Last month, TSC indicated that it needed 12,000 interns to plug the staffing gap in schools around the country.
