88 Members of County Assembly have passed a motion to impeach Governor Mike Sonko.
While announcing the resolution, Speaker Benson Mutura said that only 2 ward representatives had voted against the motion recommending removal of Governor Sonko from office.
“Having confirmed that a total of 88 MCAs have voted in favour of the impeachment motion with only two against and nil abstaining, I declare that Governor Sonko stands removed as Nairobi County governor having attained the two-thirds majority vote needed,” speaker Mutura stated.
While moving motion, Nairobi County Assembly Minority leader Michael Ogada said that Sonko went overboard by frustrating the operations of the General Badi led NMS by denying them funds and outright abuse of office.
The impeachment and decision to remove Sonko out of office will now be determined at the Senate. MCAs allied to the governor expressed their faith in Senate speaker Ken Lusaka that he will squash Sonko’s impeachment.
