The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was on Monday officially registered as a political party in Kenya.
In a gazette notice No. 11254 dated 28th December, 2020, the Registrar of Political Parties announced that the Party for Development and Reform was changing its name to United Democratic Alliance.
In what has raised eyebrows among Kenyans, the party’s symbol is a wheelbarrow, with political pundits insinuating that the party is Deputy President William Ruto’s vehicle for presidency in 2022.
In the recent past, DP Ruto has been associating himself with the ‘Hustler Movement’ which subsequently brought forth the ‘wheelbarrow movement’. This two movements, they say, support Kenyans in their different ‘hustles’.
DP Ruto has also become synonymous with the phrase ‘Kazi ni Kazi‘ or ‘wera ni wera’. UDA’s slogan is ‘kazi ni kazi’, while its colours are yellow and Green, with a black-painted wheelbarrow.
DP Ruto’s close ally, Dennis Itumbi, seems to be cosy with the new party. He was the first person to share UDA’s social media handles, an indication that this might be Ruto’s 2022 vehicles with the Jubilee one tumbling.
The registrar of political parties has issued a 14 day notice for those objecting to the party’s approval to present their submissions.
Sources say former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama is the party chairman. In the past, DP Ruto had indicated that he will leave Jubilee if warangle within the party remain unresolved.
