Mathare United players undergo COVID tests ahead of season opener

In Summary
  • Players and staff of Mathare United underwent the coronavirus tests ahead of opener.
  • Team recently bagged a KSh20 million sponsorship deal from top betting firm Triple5bet.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League side Mathare United have conducted a mandatory COVID-19 test ahead of their game against Sofapaka on Saturday, January 9.

Players and staff of Mathare United underwent the coronavirus tests on Wednesday morning, before they take on ‘Batoto ba Mungu’ in their first league match of the 2020/21 season.

The match in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta, will be the first for Mathare United since they were reinstated by the Sports Disputes Tribunal. The Slum Boys alongside Zoo Kericho had been expelled by FKF over TV rights deal.

The 2008 league champions had been plagued with financial crisis but got a reprieve when betting firm, Triple5bet, came on board with a five-year sponsorship deal worth KSh20 million.

“The club can comfortably pay the players and run their activities without a problem, and it is a plus for us, and as a club, we are going to give our best to ensure we challenge for the league title this season,” said Mathare United chairman Bob Munro when they were unveiling Tripple5bet.

Mathare will be starting their season at a time when the rest of the clubs have played six games already this season, meaning that they will have to try and catch up, as most of their fixtures have been congested into a two-week period.
