Drama ensued at the funeral service of Chris Nderitu, the 45-year-old disabled man who was killed by a VIP convoy near the Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County last Saturday.
The funeral held in Karundas area in Kieni was temporarily disrupted after a group of youth demanded that Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua, nominated MP David Sankok and nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura, who were in attendance, be given a chance to address mourners.
When their demand were met, the leaders castigated those involved in the fatal accident for carelessness, demanding them to compensate the family failure to which they will organise for demonstrations to compel the State to take action.
According to the family, the vehicle that hit their kin was part of a convoy of government officials that were attending the Sagana meetings hosted by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
On the fateful day, Nderitu had left his home to accompany one of his relatives to the local shopping center. He, unfortunately, met his death a few paces from his home where tragedy happened.
A speeding convoy of government VIPs passed them and when his relative questioned their speed, she says Chris replied by indicating that they were on the right side of the road.
“Gari tatu ilimgonga…magari kubwa…hiyo ma V8, lakini hakukufia hapo, alikufa akipelekwa General. (He was hit by three cars…big cars…those V8. He did not die on the spot, he died while being taken to hospital),” said Jecinta Wanjira, an aunt to the deceased.
“Ako na kijana anasoma secondary. Serikali iangalie hiyo maneno vizuri, kwa sababu hakuna mtu mwingine atakuja kuangalia hii mji. (” added Ms. Wanjira.
The accident is said to have occurred after one of the vehicles tried to overtake the others in the convoy.
