in the inaugural Madrid 7’s in Spain on Sunday.
Argentina’s Matias Osadczuk sliced through Kenyan defenders like a double-edged sword to score his try, and successfully curling his conversion. 7-0 score line in favour of Argentina.
However, a high tackle on Shujaa’s fly half Johnstone Olindi led to Osadczuk being sent off giving the Shujaa an upper hand.
Shujaa levelled a few minutes later with captain and speedster Nelson Oyoo offloading a superb pass to Alvin Otieno, who cleverly side-stepped to evade his markers, scoring under the post. 7-7 score line on the board.
Heading to the intervals, an infringement and handling error deep in Shujaa’s 10-yard allowed Argentina to score their second try through Rodrigo Etchart. Fly half Osadczuk again converted. 14-7 lead for the Los Pumas.
Soon after the intervals, Shujaa’s captain Nelson Oyoo was sent off for a malicious tackle on an opponent handing Kenya a numerical disadvantage.
However, the Los Pumas failed to take advantage of their numerical advantage with Oyoo coming back to score a converted try after Ambaka set him up. 14-14 score.
A last minute handling error by Oyoo saw Argentina’s talisman Rodrigo Etchart seal his brace to hand Argentina a 21-14 win.
It was a second successive loss for Shujaa against the Los Pumas who had earlier beat them 21-7 in the preliminaries.
However, Shujaa will pick lots of positives from the two-day tournament, given it was the first time they were involved in a competition after a long COVID-19 break.
On the other hand, Kenya Lionesses lost 10-12 to Spain in the fifth place playoff.
The Innocent Simiyu charges are using the tournament to prepare for the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo.
