A Nairobi Member of County Assembly (MCA) has been sentenced to three years in prison after he was found guilty of demanding and receiving a bribe.
David Mberia, who represents Karen Ward, will also lose his seat.
Milimani Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki slapped Mberia a Ksh700,000 fine in lieu of the jail term.
“The accused is barred from holding public office and accessing his office,” ruled Nzioki. “This order is directed to be transferred to speaker county Assembly for the record.”
Mberia faced three separate counts, for demanding Ksh1m, Ksh500,000 and Ksh200,000 in bribes. The court heard that he received the money from a school to influence a decision involving a land dispute.
Mberia’s co-accused in the last count MCAs Jared Okode (Mathare) and Abraham Mwangi (Woodley) were acquitted.
