A man impersonating a police officer was on Friday, Feb., 26 arrested past curfew hours in Lang’ata, Nairobi County.
Gregory Simiyu Mabele, 40, was dressed in what looked like Administration Police (AP) Service uniform – patched jungle green camouflage sweater, side-pocketed pants and, humorously, lace-less sneakers. His mask bore the logo of the police arm too.
While on duty, uniformed police officers wear standard-issue boots, not sneakers. They also conduct patrols as a pair, bare-minimum.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Simiyu was caught walking around the aforementioned area, pretending to be offering public safety and security services.
“Detectives suspect that he is part of a wider cabal of criminals, who pose as Police Officers and betray the trust of unsuspecting members of the public, by defrauding & stealing from them,” DCI says.
The suspect will be arraigned tomorrow (Monday, Feb., 29) on charges of impersonation, and being in unlawful possession of government stores contrary to Section 324 (2) of the National Police Service Act.
