Kenya national men’s rugby sevens team Shujaa finished its 2021 Madrid Sevens campaign on a losing note after going down 36-19 to Argentina.
It was the last match of the tournament played this afternoon at the National Rugby Stadium in the Spanish capital.
Argentina overpowered Kenya right from the kick off whistle and by the second minute, had five points in the bag. They then converted two minutes later to make it 12-0.
Rodrigo Etchart punished Kenya further to make the score 17-0. The Argentines made it 24-0 seconds later, overpowering the Shujaas.
Bush Mwale reduced the deficit to 24-5 with his eighth-minute try, giving Innocent Simiyu’s men some hope. At the half, score was 24-7.
The second half was equally tantalizing. Two minutes into it, Argentina increased their lead to 29-7 before Taabu converted for Kenya to make it 31-12. Ojeey got his name on the score sheet but it was too late for Shujaa. They fell 36-19 in the final whistle.
Shujaa had kicked off the tourney impressively by beating Portugal 26-12, Chile 15-5, and U.S 29-12. They survived hosts Spain by a narrow margin of 19-17 before the eventual pummeling by Argentina.
