With heightened political temperatures in the country ahead of 2022 General Election, every politician’s move is put under the microscope.
On Monday, a video clip showing Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata sprinting raised eye brows.
In the video, Senator Kang’ata, dressed in a blue designer suit and a fitting white shirt is seen sprinting from a crowd that was vigorously dancing to “Firirinda”.
Kenyans, in their usual demeanor, started spreading rumours and propaganda. Some said that the youthful senator was running away from a crowd that wanted to rough him up.
But Kang’ata has come out to clarify. It turns out the activities in the video happened on Sunday, when DP Ruto was attending a church service in Murang’a.
“Ignore the propaganda (laughing emojis)…I came to DP’s function very late. Found the entrance blocked by vehicles. I alighted and run past the blocking vehicles towards the church as the speeches were almost done,” said Kang’ata.
Senator Kang’ata was under criticism and praise in equal measures after he wrote a letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta, alleging that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is unpopular in Mt Kenya region.
His critics said the letter that was leaked to the press was a ploy to shift allegiance (from Kieleweke to Tangatanga) ahead of the 2022 elections.
True to that, Senator Kang’ata has since joined DP Ruto’s camp, hence the reason for the sprint to catch up with the second in command.
It is the contents of Kang’ata’a letter that has come back to bite him. Contrary to his opinion that BBI is unpopular in the vote-rich region, all the counties unanimously passed the BBI Bill.
