A 20-year-old man was yesterday arrested by police after he was found in the company of two minors in a lodging.
Daniel Wafula was seized in Laini Moja, Kitale, Trans Nzoia county.
Charles Namunyo, Kitale municipality chief, told TV47 that the man allegedly offered the 13-year-old and 17-year-old girls “shelter”.
“I received intel from the village elders and Nyumba Kumi leaders that there were two school girls and a man at a lodging. Acting on speed, I immediately lobbied officers and we rushed there,” Namunyo said.
The three were caught in the scene and taken to Kitale police station.
Upon interrogation, one of the girls said that Wafula had promised to offer them “shelter from motorbike riders that were harassing them on Friday night.”
“I was with my friend headed home when we got lost. There were some riders trailing us, and we feared that they would harm us,” the girl said. “We met Wafula who told us that we could spend the night at the lodging and head home the following morning, which we agreed to.”
Wafula said he was only offering the girls protection from the boda boda riders, and had no ill intent.
“I came across these two at night, with some riders who were forcing them to go with them. Since they knew me, they pleaded with me to rescue them from that situation, which I did, ” Wafula said.
Namunyo however said the suspect has to prove his innocence in a court of law. “I am warning men, that they should go for the adult women instead of these young girls. Once we find you defiling school children, you will be punished.”
Wafula, who is locked up at Kitale police station will be arraigned in court on Monday.
