Court proceedings of an inquest into the sudden death of Keroche Breweries heiress Tecra Muigai continued on Wednesday.
After the deceased mother, Keroche Breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja, told the court how “old” boyfriend took advantage of her daughters innocence, it was time for Tecra’s former bodyguard to tell his account.
Just like a family friend had told the court on Tuesday, Tecra’s personal bodyguard-cum-driver painted a picture of a not so rosy affair with Omar Lali.
Eric Cheruiyot, a former Kenya Defence Force officer, recounted when Omar Lali allegedly threatened before verbally abusing Tecra during her brother, James Karanja’s birthday party in Tanzania. This was not the first, neither was it the last incident of confrontation between the two lovebirds.
“During a birthday party for her brother James in Tanzania, Omar was annoyed apparently because he was not pleased with the company at the party. She started abusing her, calling her provocative names, I could not take it,” Cheruiyot told the court.
The ex-military man narrated another incidence where Tecra slapped Omar Lali, after he had refused to board a personal vehicle.
“I can remember well Tecra slapping Omar for refusing to board the personal vehicle they were using to travel to another hotel to meet some friends,” Cheruiyot narrates, “Tecra grabbed Mr Lali’s shirt and forced him to board their vehicle but he resisted. It’s then I heard Tecra unleash a slap on Lali then he boarded the vehicle.”
During Cheruiyot’s testimony, it emerged that Tecra did not have an M-Pesa number. Reportedly, her money was usually sent to Cheruiyot by her personal assistant, Sarita Ikenye. Cheruiyot would then forward the money to Omar Lali, who never told Tecra.
Senior principal magistrate Ms Zainab Abdul heard that Cheruiyot had to quit his job after Omar Lali proved to be a thorn in his flesh.
He had worked as Tecra’s bodyguard and driver since May 2019, quitting in January 2020.
Detectives and medical experts who performed the post-mortem on Tecra’s body are also expected to tell the court on their findings.
Tecra died under unclear circumstances on May 2 2020 while on holiday in Lamu with Omar Lali. She was laid to rest at her parents’ home in Naivasha on May 16, 2020.
